A Quick Guide For Making Scented Candles
Many people often ask me "How do you make scented candles?" When I tell them how easy it is, they are often shocked. I'll give you some quick tips that will have you making wonderful scented candles
in no time.
Select The Right Oil
Alcohol-based perfumes are your friend. I suggest you use that type instead of water-based perfume. I'm sure you heard the old saying the oil and water don't mix. Waxes are close to oil in their chemical composition. You should be able to find quality alcohol-based perfumes at any craft store.
Select Your Wax
You can really select any type of wax you like. The most common choices are soy, gel, palm, paraffin and beeswax. Think about how much fragrance you want to use before selecting a wax. Fragrance amounts are very important when using gel waxes. If you need a heavy amount of fragrance, then you should select a high density gel wax. If this is your first time making candles I suggest you use paraffin wax.
Melt The Wax
Now that you've selected your wax, it is time to melt it. Save yourself tons of heartache and aggravation and use the double boiler technique when melting candles. The term double boiler may sound complicated, but it is very simple to execute. You will need two pots, one small pot and one larger pot. Place your wax in the smaller pot. Next, fill the larger pot with water. Place the smaller pot inside the larger pot. See, so far, so good. Turn the heat on your stove to and heat the wax to 165-185 degrees. It is important that you use a thermometer to monitor the temperature. If the heat is too high, the wax could burn and you won't be happy.
Add Fragrance and Wick It Real Good
Once your wax is melted at the right temperature you are ready to add your fragrance. As a rule of thumb, I suggest you use one ounce of fragrance per pound of wax. You could use more, but that is the standard that most candle makers follow. After adding the fragrance, you can now pour the wax into your mold. If you actually want this candle to burn you will need a wick. Insert the wick in the mold and let the candle cool.
Scents Are Great
More and more I'm finding out that people are really attracted to candles by their scent. Who wouldn't love to have wonderful fragrances filling their house. It is easy. Give it a try.
I teach people how to make great homemade candles.

The Art of Sending Good Birthday Greeting Cards
Pretty much everyone has received birthday cards throughout their life. If you live in the western world it is almost inescapable. The problem is, that while many people send birthday greeting cards not many people really seem to get what makes a good birthday card.
If you want to send good birthday greeting cards, a good place to start would be choosing something that is specific to the person who is receiving it. This is not always so easy to do, but suppose the person celebrating a birthday is a big tennis fan. Chances are pretty good that you can find a card that has something to do with tennis. If your friend is a fireman, you are in luck. There seem to be a disproportionate amount of birthday greeting cards with a fireman on them. Only problem is, they usually look like they are not dressed to fight a fire!
Sometimes it is good to find greeting cards that have nothing written on the inside at all. That way if you see one with a picture on it that relates to somebody you know who is having a birthday, you can write a little joke on the inside of the card and it will really look like you put some thought into what you are sending them.
It might be a good idea to put a little note on a slip of paper inside the card when you buy it; you might think that you will remember the joke you want to write when it comes time to send the card. Then you are staring at the thing and wondering what on earth you were thinking of when you purchased it. Not only did you waste your time and your money, but now you do not have a good card to send to them on their birthday.
If you are really an organized person or especially if you are a terribly disorganized person it is a good idea to start a collection of birthday greeting cards so that you do not have to make a trip every time a birthday comes up. You can go and get some greeting cards or gifts suitable for kids, some suitable for teenagers and some suitable for adults and even some for seniors.
When you are putting your collection of gifts or greeting cards together, keep some of the people that you would normally send a birthday card to in mind. If you pause and consider that most of your friends are in their twenties, you probably will not want to buy a bunch of birthday cards that make jokes about being older than dirt. Actually, those might not work for anybody.
Remembering to send people gifts or greeting cards on their birthday can really be a nice gesture. If you do it right, it is even better. Try to keep in mind where and when they will be opening the card; if they are going to be at a party or if they might be opening the card in front of their children you might want to keep the subject matter a little more tame than you might if it was something they would read alone.

Embroidery Applique and Native Americans
By: Boris Humphrey
I once went on a hike with my family down the Grand Canyon. The hike was not nearly as long as I feared that it might be; we made it down the Canyon without considerable problem, other than sore knees from gravity pounding my legs down the trail. The day wasn't terribly hot, and even then we enjoyed a certain amount of shade for large portions of our journey. My father had brought several water bottles with him in his backpack in the event of dehydration, but we found that th... Read
I had gone on many hikes previously, including a fifty-miler across Montana with my Boy Scout troop earlier that summer. Along the way we saw beautiful mountains, streams, and fields. We carried everything on our backs during the entire extent of the journey, including our tents, food, water, tools, flashlights, sanitation supplies, and so on. Every night we would reach our planned campsite and finally pull our backpacks off of our wearied bodies, resting our tired legs and basking in the immeasurable joy of stasis. We brought light food and simple fire-making supplies, allowing for us to create simple meals that were still filling and satisfying after a long, hard day of hiking.
Considering the epic and arduous nature of that hike I had taken up earlier during the summer, I figured that our brief foray into the Grand Canyon would prove to be completely unchallenging and uninteresting. However, the sheer red rock walls fascinated me. Below on the canyon floor, beautiful green shrubbery enticed me. Though sweat dripped down my back, I was largely unaware of any physical exhaustion and instead enraptured by the swelling vista before me. By the time that we reached the very bottom of the canyon, I found that this valley had captured my imagination and refused to let it escape.
At the bottom of the canyon we stretched, relaxed, and drank water, much like we did at the end of each day on my fifty-mile hike earlier that summer. After I had rested enough, I decided to have a look around while waiting for my two little sisters to catch up with the rest of us. Several tents were pitched not far from where we sat, so I made my way over so as to investigate their contents, and whether they contained anything (or anyone) of interest.
To my sheer and utter delight, I found that the first tent contained a trio of ancient, wrinkled Native American women dressed in shawls. They sat in the dusty red dirt on the bottom of their floorless tent, taking shelter in the shade from the day's hot sun. Sitting on the ground before them were cloths of all kinds: shawls, like those that they wore, carpets, headdresses, rugs, shirts, pants, and so on. Each of these items of clothing had been hand-made, and hand-embroidered with various patterns and images. Embroidery applique is not usually my cup of tea, but I found myself to be fascinated by the intriguing images. Embroidery applique, for these women, seemed to be almost something spiritual.
Embroidery was obviously more than just a way of weaving images into cloth-it was a worthy craft that connected these women to their culture and to their heritage.
At the end of my canyon journey, a journey that I expected to yield little of interest, I found myself enthralled by the simplest of things. Embroidery applique is a simple and humble craft that I had ignored for most of my life as being nothing more than quaint. Embroidery applique was usually good material for making fun of my little sisters and their futures with cats. appliqued
Embroidery was boring. But at the end of a journey in the beautiful outdoors, I saw it, and most of life, as being more than what I had originally thought.
I love to travel and I have found the my favorite place to be is somewhere besides here. I have found that airplane riding is really fun, and guides are nice.
Sewing Project - How To Make
Homemade Baby Bibs
I just recently became a first time grandmother and have been enjoying the new little addition to our family. I am also an avid crafter and seamstress so I can often be found in my craft and sewing room creating some wonderful things for my friends and family.
With the new addition of the baby girl to our family, I decided I wanted to make some homemade baby bibs. I thought the process would be difficult, but once I got started...I realized how easy it was to create my own bibs for our grand-daughter.
Here are the supplies you will need:
1 pre-purchased terry cloth bib to use as a pattern1 package of double fold bias tape
(2 yard package), per bibsewing machinesewing thread
1/4 yard of cotton terry cloth fabric
Scissors
Miscellaneous sewing supplies
Note: If you really want to be frugal, you can recycle some old terry cloth bath towels for this project.
Lay your pre-purchased baby bib down on a piece of white paper and trace around the shape using a pencil, then cut out your paper pattern. Next, unroll your bias tape and cut off a piece of bias tape measuring 34" in length. Pin your paper pattern down onto your terry cloth fabric and pin into place. Cut around the paper pattern and then remove the pins. Cover and pin the bias tape around the raw edges of the sides and bottom of your bib, don't cover the neck area just yet.
Using your sewing machine, stitch the bias tape into place and fasten off. Cut another piece of bias tape measuring approximately 26" long. Attach the center of the bias tape to the center neck area of the bib, pin into place. (note: a piece of bias tape about 10" long is left at both ends of the neck edge for the ties.) Using your sewing machine, stitch around the neck opening so that you are attaching and covering the raw edges.
You can use your pre-purchased one as a guide on how it should be sewn.
Decorations: If desired, you can use 3/4" wide eyelet lace instead of bias tape in step one of the sewing, but you will still need to use a coordinating color of bias tape for the neck area and ties. You can embroider a name or nice design onto the front of the bib or purchase some cute iron-on applique's.

Make All-Season Ornaments From Cinnamon Dough
They're Not Just For Christmas!
Nothing says 'home' quite like the aroma of baked goods laced with cinnamon, and the scent of cinnamon makes any home smell fresh and inviting. While you may associate cinnamon scented ornaments with the holiday season, you can use them all year round to bring a fresh down home feeling to your kitchen, pantry or a sunny window. They're easy to make and cheaper than store-bought fragrances that are full of chemicals and additives.
Gather your Supplies & Make Some Dough
You can whip up a batch of cinnamon dough ornaments with items that you have around the kitchen every day. Measure out one cup of cinnamon and one cup of applesauce. You'll also need a larger plastic zipper-top bag, cookie cutters for whatever shapes you'd like to make, a pair of scissors and narrow ribbons for hanging your finished creations. If you want to add other decorative touches to your project, you'll also need plastic craft eyes, latex craft paint, a fine tip artist brush, clear drying glue and faux gems and colored glitter.
The dough is very easy to make. Simply place the applesauce and cinnamon in the zip-up bag and need the mixture until a soft dough forms. As soon as the ingredients are well combined, the dough is ready to use. Roll it out on a cutting board to roll into pinwheels or cut into shapes. You can make whatever shapes or trinkets you can imagine. Cookie cutters in the shape of stars, animals, flowers or geometric shapes are just a few of the possibilities.
Cinnamon Scented Dough Ornament Ideas
Try making sparkling pinwheel ornaments to fill any room with the enticing aroma of cinnamon. Arrange your cinnamon ornaments in a pretty glass or ceramic bowl with a handful of cinnamon sticks or potpourri for a unique table top accessory.
To make the ornaments, start by rolling the dough out so that it is about one-quarter inch thick. Sprinkle your choice of colored glitter on top of the dough and roll it up tightly. Trim off the ends and slice the rolled dough vertically to make ornaments. Allow the ornaments to dry for at least twenty-four hours then display them in a bowl, glass vase, or clear coffee cup.
Make bears, stars, flowers, cats, dogs, cows and more with cookie cutters. Don't limit yourself to cookie cutter shapes, however. You can cut out simple shapes like sailboats and birdhouses with a knife. Embellish cinnamon dough animals with plastic eyes and use thin licorice for whiskers, or you can paint features on the crafts with latex craft paint. Lightly press colored or metallic glitter into the dough while it is still pliable for stars, flowers or other shapes. Or, instead of glitter, add clear drying cement and affix faux gems after the dough has dried. You can also embellish your creations with buttons, beads, seashells and stones. If you want to hang your creations with ribbon, create a hole for the ribbon with an ordinary drinking straw. Always allow finished ornaments to dry completely before handing them. Hang groups of ornaments threaded with ribbon and use them as sun catchers in a kitchen window, or hang them from a door, a shelf peg or below a cupboard. When embellished with glitter or gems, they will add sparkle and the soothing scent of cinnamon throughout the house.

Crochet Tips
Please click here for more information on the book.
Many theorize that knitted and crochet items survived in the early period of imperialism. Many communities in this era used this kind of industry as their main source of living. The crocheted and knitted products are mostly purchased by the middle class society.
Crochet was known to identify the status symbol of a person from the early history. This kind culture was practiced by the royalties who were able to afford buying expensive lace products and make the value of crochet products to depreciate.
Many have theorized that knitting and crocheting was developed through the old practices of people leaving in countries like China, Middle Eastern countries, and in South America. Many people believe that crochet may have been practiced by early cultures to flex the muscles of the forefinger rather than a fashion hook. This theory was accepted by many craft historians because of the lack of artifact crochet products as proof of its traditional practices.
In the early 1800's, many European communities have used crochet products in place of the much expensive lace made materials. Crocheting only requires fewer materials, and it is also widely accepted by different social classes. From these periods, crochet was done mostly on thread. The most common widely made products from crochet were filet crochet made in rows either open or close mesh to make a particular pattern. While in the 1900's, the massive production of steel hooks have introduced many products which are made from thread.
In today's time, crocheting and knitting is the pleasure of many people. It has recently evolved the interest of many people on handicraft
making that made it so popular with the high quality of yarns and threads used. The pleasure of making a crochet item is working it with different yarn textures and colors.
As a beginner, a person should learn the process of making a pattern row and a single stitch crocheting.
Here are some basic steps that will help a person learn how to make a crochet product.
1. First, the person may need the use of crochet supplies like a size G crochet hook, small scissors, worsted-weight yarn with any colors, and a big-eyed yarn needle.
2. He may start by holding the crochet hook in his right hand if he is right-handed. Then he may create a slipped knot on the hook.
3. He may slide the hooked yarn to the slipknot of the hook. This process will create a continuous stitch or a chained like stitches. He will then proceed to bringing back the yarn on top of the hook making the thread go into the hook and grabbing the slip knot into the hook.
4. He can pass on the first chain stitch allowing the knot to be properly hooked on the knot of the thread. This will allow the thread to be properly in place so that it will not loosen. A much tighter knot would be better to create a chain stitch.
5. He may insert the hook to the hole of on the next chain stitch, and then slide the yarn passing through the center of the second chain stitch going to the upper part of the hook. He may have now created two loops on the hook of the threads.
6. He may bring the yarn back on the hook from back to front and slide the knot in the center of the loops that he had created on the hook.
7. From the second loop, create another one chain stitch to make a counter clock wise loop. This allows the hook to remain in the chain stitches. He may start again in creating the following rows, creating the same loops on the previous rows.
8. He may create a single crochet stitch in the first loop tightened going to the following loops of the previous rows. He must be exactly sure to create the hook on the last stitch to retain the stitches on their places.
To finish the work, he may cut the excess yarn on the skin. He must not forget to retain at least 6 inches of the thread on the last chain stitch. This will allow him to slide the hook up to the upper part of the loops and bringing the thread into the last loops of the hook. As a beginner, he may find it difficult to do especially on more detailed crochet products.
He may start doing these basic steps to help him get used with the techniques.

Craft Shops - Decoupage
By: sabina
All too often it's just so easy to throw away that piece of furniture that leers as an eyesore in the corner of your room. With furniture being so easy and cheap to purchase these days it's no wonder that older pieces of furniture get neglected and discarded so easily. Wouldn't it be great if you could keep that favourite chair and give it a unique look at minimal cost? Standing out from the crowd and having your own uniquely styled furniture!!
Klondyke have many craft shops located in their branches at Blackpool, Inverness, Carlisle and Lambton Park. Decoupage (or découpage) is the art of decorating an object by gluing coloured paper cut outs onto it in combination with special paint effects, gold leaf, etc. Commonly an object like a small box or an item of furniture is covered by cut outs from magazines or from purpose-manufactured papers. Each layer is sealed with varnishes (often multiple coats) until the "stuck on" appearance disappears and the result looks like painting or inlay work. The traditional technique used 30-40 layers of varnish which were then sanded to a polished finish. This was known in 18th century England as The Art of Japanning after its presumed origins.
The are many resources available on the internet to give you ideas of what can be achieved, alternatively just enquire at any of our craft shops, we will be happy to provide information and advice for any of your craft projects.
We previously wrote an article about scrap book making, which is another item that can be constructed from crafts, and things you would normally throw away. Crafts and craft making in this day and age is such a great thing, with recycling being the main focus of everything and the economic finiancial climate being as unpredicatable as it is, basing our efforts on craft making is saving both the enviroment by using resources we would normally discard and by helping keep costs down, so instead of throwing awaying we can now repair and modernise to suite or lives as they are now, to fit in better in our homes than on a scrap heap! But most of all, crafts and craft making is such a bond maker, it can bring an otherwise distant family closer and help create memorable fond moments as well as new age items and furniture.

You should be able to select various preset layouts for your pages in photo book, but also have the freedom to modify them as you see fit. It should also inform you of the quality of your photos as you upload them, so you will aware of which images may not print as well as you might hope.
4. Quality of Printing - no one would like to see that their time and effort gets wasted because of poor quality printing, when you have put in a lot of creativity in designing the photo book. It is necessary to ensure that your photo book is printed with the highest standards. The quality of paper used in printing the photo, is very critical.
