Electric Scooters & Electric Motorcycles
Why Are They So Popular?
You know those 2 or 3 wheeled electric rides that young kids to adults all seem to love.
Their popularity comes from many reasons, the cost to purchase and operate one compared to the gasoline or fuel dependent electric scooters and electric motorcycles. Electric scooters are an easy way for young children to get their first taste of operating an engine powered vehicle other than a go-kart. Parents like electric scooters because they don't see them as being quite so dangerous because most electric scooters are only capable of traveling at relatively low speeds. Pre-teens and teens love them because they aren't just a cheap form of transportation, but moreover they are a way to establish some independence from having to ask their parents, relatives, or friends, for a ride everywhere. Neighbors love them because for the largest part they are a quiet ride. Electric scooters and electric motorcycles are Eco-Friendly because they don't rely on gasoline or petroleum products to operate, so they don't pollute the air. Electric scooters or electric motorcycles are small in comparison to cars and create no congested parking lots. Last but not least electric scooters can even be operated indoors, they don't require a trip to the gas station, they can be charged right at home, or any place else that might have a 220 volt outlet for use.
What's the difference between an electric scooter and electric motorcycle?
An electric scooter is a type of electric motorcycle with a step-through frame and usually with smaller wheels designed for urban transportation. For the most part electric scooters are designed to travel at lower speeds than electric motorcycles; they are smaller in design, lighter in weight, travel shorter distances per battery charge than an electric motorcycle and mainly cost less. Electric motorcycles are defined by speed and can travel 31mph or more. Electric scooters come in stand-up riding models and unlike electric motorcycles are designed for different types of uses. Although, the line for what constitutes a 2 wheeled motorcycle has blurred due to marketing, styling, and public opinion. Electric scooters are also divided into different categories like:
* Two-wheeled Vespa-styled scooters 0-60 mph (0-100 km/h)
* Two-wheeled Stand-up scooters (like a kick scooter) 0-25 mph (0-40 km/h)
* Two-wheeled, side-by-side stand-up scooters like manufactured by Segway PT 0-12 mph (0-20 km/h)
* Two-wheeled Seated scooters 0-25 mph (0-40 km/h)
* Three-wheeled standup scooters like manufactured by Zap 0-15 mph (0-25 km/h)
* Three- and four-wheeled Mobility scooter (disability riders) 0-10 mph (0-15 km/h)
* Three- and four-wheeled Seated scooters/golf carts 0-25 mph (0-40 km/h)
When was the first electric motorcycle made?
Well, according to the patents office the first reference to an Electric Motorcycle being developed was in the late 1860s. And according to a Popular Mechanics article printed in 1911 the Electric Motorcycle was available then.
What powers these great rides?
Generally, the source that powered the electric motor was batteries, but the development of fuel cell technology has lead to other prototypes. Some examples are: the ENV from Intelligent Energy, Honda's scooter using the Honda FC Stack, and the Yamaha FC-AQEL. Also, petroleum hybrid-electric motorcycles are under development. Some examples are the Ecycle, and Yamaha's Gen-RYU. The gradual technological developments in batteries are making the electric scooters and electric motorcycles an even more practical form of transportation.
California buyers of new electric motorcycles get more for their money.
Because the electric scooters and electric motorcycles are a much greener choice of transportation the State of California is leading the way in encouraging its citizens to purchase them. California's Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger passed a bill offering anyone who purchases an electric motorcycle a $1,500 rebate or credit and the US Government is also offering anyone who purchases an electric motorcycle a tax credit. So purchasing an electric motorcycle is quickly becoming an idea for many. Unfortunately the electric scooters aren't offered under any of the rebates or tax credits because their price is already seen as affordable enough for most buyers.
Some disadvantages of owning an electric scooter or an electric motorcycle?
The first disadvantage seems to be the initial cost, mainly electric motorcycles cost more to purchase than their gasoline powered cousins. The same holds true for some electric scooters.
Other disadvantages are that the owner is limited to shorter distances of travel on an electric scooter or electric motorcycle before having to recharge it. Electric motorcycles aren't capable of reaching the higher speeds like most gasoline powered motorcycles. Charging an electric motorcycle can be hard at times because not too many 220 volt electrical outlets are located near streets or at close by service stations. If you live in an apartment it can be almost impossible to take an electric motorcycle battery inside to charge it. On a cold winter day a -20 degree C lead battery's capacity can drop to as low as 20%. But one of the most concerning disadvantages to riding an electric motorcycle or electric scooter is that in traffic the operator must always be aware of what's going on around them. Electric motorcycles and electric scooters operate so quietly that it is hard for another driver to hear the electric powered vehicle. So anyone operating an electric powered scooter or motorcycle must learn to drive even more defensively than in an automobile or while operating a gasoline powered vehicle.
So, for all of the advantages and the disadvantages of owning an electric scooter or electric motorcycle the fact remains that they are definitely a greener form of transportation and are gaining in popularity every day.
